Slavoj Zizek
35th Festival Guest Director: Zizek!
The Directors of the Telluride Film Festival are thrilled to announce that Slavoj Zizek will preside as the Guest Director of the Festival's 35th Show. The Slovenian-born irrepressible political philosopher, cultural theorist, academic superstar and impassioned cinephile is certain to stimulate controversy and conversation with his hand-picked film treasures and exhilarating approach to talking about movies, art, culture, politics, and desire.
Most recently, Zizek collaborated with filmmaker Sophie Fiennes on The Perverts Guide to Cinema (2006), a film that offers a striking visual introduction to Zizek's ideas on subjectivity, sexuality, and the relationship between fantasy and reality. Fiennes observes that Zizek is "always inverting things and setting up unexpected relationships. It's kind of like a mind gym."
"What I love about Slavoj's way of looking at film", Fiennes says, "is that he shows how important form is. Intuitively, when you watch films, you are enjoying that idiosyncratic language. And his explicit way of reading great moments is exhilarating for me." In the film, Zizek guides viewers into a close examination of some of the most lauded and fascinating films in cinema history.
Join us at the 35th Telluride Film Festival to meet Slavoj Zizek and savor the feast of films he will bring to the Festival!

TFF Picks at the Oscars & Spirit Awards
The Telluride Film Festival doesn't factor in glitz or awards potential when choosing the films it showcases each year. Our sole criterion is quality, we try and find the very best movies, new and old, from the U.S. or anywhere, to share with our audiences. Still, it's hard not to feel a bit of pride that the movies that we helped launch from our tiny box canyon have done so well in the bigger world. In total, members of the Telluride family took home two Oscars (for Diablo Cody's JUNO screenplay and tributee Daniel Day Lewis' performance in THERE WILL BE BLOOD) and 17 Oscar nominations (for, in various categories, PERSEPOLIS, THE SAVAGES, INTO THE WILD, I'M NOT THERE, DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY, SALIM BABA, THE COUNTERFEITERS and MADAME TUTLI-PUTLI). Add to that nine of the 17 Independent Spirit Awards and acclaim from critics groups from around the continent. What a year, both for Telluride and for high-quality cinema. We congratulate our friends who earned these justly-deserved awards, and thank them again for sharing these amazing films with us.

Rob Carlton and Alex Weinress at TFF's "Made on a Mac" series
Apple.com Features TFF Filmmakers
Any patron who met Rob Carlton and Alex Weinress at our last festival will tell you - they are funny, smart and creative guys. Their short CARMICHAEL & shane, which was featured at TFF33, was a hoot - just about as politically incorrect as can be, but with a deadpan innocence we just couldn't resist. We are proud to see that Apple, our presenting sponsor, agrees.
Rob and Alex participated last year in TFF's ongoing "Made on a Mac" series, explaining how Apple technology helped them to crank out their remarkably humorous piece in just three days, and for next to no money. Now Apple has published their story on apple.com
We are proud to announce that two films featured in our 33rd Festival program have taken awards at the EFA in Warsaw, Poland. VOLVER, directed by Pedro Almodovar, walked away with a stunning five awards, including Best Director and Best Cinematography. Its star, Telluride Tributee Penelope Cruz took the award for Best Actress.
For all of it's success at the ceremony, however, VOLVER didn't quite edge out THE LIVES OF OTHERS (also screened at our last festival) by Florian Henckel, which was honored with the award for Best Film. We send a hearty congratulations out to all of them - well done!
Though we have never really been big into buzz-mongering, we do like to listen to what people think. Our friends over at the Hollywood Reporter have collected a remarkable and extensive crop of articles and blog entries related to our 33rd event - CLICK HERE to see what everyone has to say.
Thanks Hollywood Reporter!
